From Familiarity to Foreign Lands: Unexpected Military Relocation Abroad

The military life is a whirlwind, a reality I thought I’d left behind after retiring from the Air Force. Little did I know, it had other plans for us. My husband, still active duty, landed a coveted slot at ACSC, a year-long course, with a follow-on assignment in DC, where we'd comfortably settled for four years. Thinking short-term, we made the decision to invest in a home in Virginia, assuming stability for a few more years.

Life, however, had its own script. Just six months post buying our dream house, we received the news that jolted us: England—a three-year assignment. Shock doesn’t quite encapsulate the whirlwind of emotions. We hadn't anticipated this abrupt shift. See, my husband's career path rarely led to overseas postings. The suddenness was a curveball we hadn’t trained for.

The initial blow was hard. I wrestled with uncertainties about my job’s compatibility with an overseas move. Our freshly-purchased home suddenly became a symbol of unforeseen change. Worse still, our beloved family dog Lady was deemed unfit for the journey due to her advanced years, adding another layer of heartache as we sought a new home for her.
